Halloween in Valencia: the city’s bat and a barbershop in El Carmen or La Petxina

This week Valencia has two bats. One belongs to Halloween, in the bars and on the streets. The other has been on the coat of arms for centuries: the rat penat. Nobody has to import it. It is already the city’s animal.

Barber Shop Valencia keeps both shops open through the week. El Carmen is in the old town, at Calle Baja 50. La Petxina is in Extramurs, at Juan Llorens 18. From 26 to 31 October 2026, new clients get 10% off any haircut.

The bat that was already Valencia’s

Local legend says that when James I took the city in 1238, a bat landed on the royal banner. The rat penat has crowned Valencia’s coat of arms ever since, above the senyera. It is a civic symbol, not a late-October prop.

In the nineteenth century the cultural society Lo Rat Penat took that name. If you see bats in El Carmen this week, part of the drawing was here long before Halloween.

El Carmen at night

El Carmen is the north of Ciutat Vella. Narrow streets, ochre walls and, at the top of the neighborhood, the Torres de Serranos facing the Jardí del Túria. The barbershop is at C/ Baja 50, under the black El Carmen sign.

Inside, the tower mural covers one wall and the chairs face the mirror. It fits if the 31st finds you in El Carmen, if you are coming down from the towers, or if you want the cut in the center and then the streets. 31 October 2026 is a Saturday, so that day the shops run from 10:00 to 18:00. Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 20:00.

La Petxina, on the other side of the walk

La Petxina is more daytime than costume. Exposed brick, a barber pole, and the Jardí del Túria a short walk away, toward Viveros or the Museu de Belles Arts. The shop is at C/ Juan Llorens 18.

Same hours as El Carmen. It fits if you are coming from the river, from Extramurs, or from home in the neighborhood, and you want the cut before crossing into the center. More on the area is in this La Petxina article.

Sweets on Friday and Saturday

On Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October we are giving sweets to children at La Petxina only, on Juan Llorens 18. Friday from 10:00 to 20:00. Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00. There are no sweets at El Carmen.

The cut for this week

The chair does not need a costume. A clean fade and a defined beard are enough: if there is a cape or makeup later, the hair is already done. The menu is on services.
